Today my sons neighborhood friend (6) came by with another boy around the same age and his younger brother. They were as always beaming with joy and full of energy. After lots of zipping and zapping around the house we settled in at the table and begun to all work on a huge lego set. After chatting with them over grapes about the long weekend as we worked on the lego I begun to hear murmurs of “this is boring, lets go.”
My house can be called the boring home in the street; but it in no way moves my needle; because I know they will be back tomorrow. You see as these sweet boys grow older, homes that offer them video games and other screen related entertainment will be more appealing. But in our home I am quick to remind them we mind our language. In our home, we exhaust all our outdoor options before we go indoors. In our home you will receive snacks. Video games will not be offered as a first line of entertainment. We will build legos and play UNO. So my dear sweet boys from the neighborhood, this boring mama is preserving your childhood as long as she can – because there are so many forces trying to thrust you into manhood. So until that happens, I will do my best to preserve your beautiful souls – as boring as it may be. xoxox Love, the boring mama down the street
