Boredom – a painful foe in the age of information overload

I snapped this pic after the kids woke up from an afternoon nap. It was a lazy day – really nothing exciting happening. After sitting around for a bit I begun to hear, “I am bored” what should I do? (The older one more than the younger one as usual). So we sat. At one point it actually felt painful. I cannot even describe it as a physical pain but a more mental pain. There is something about not having something to do in this age of information overload. It could be because we are inundated with so many options that are just a click away and the brain knows this oh so well.

I could have in this moment ended the misery for everyone and just get sucked into our digital vortexes. Instead, we sat with it. The boredom. We became her friend and she ours. Before I knew it our son walked over to the table pulled out a sketch pad and begun drawing. Our little girl followed suit. Before I knew it they were drawing and making all kinds of shapes. Then run outside to play then back in to help put breadcrumbs on the fish for dinner. I say all that to say, I felt it. the mental agony of boredom and how boredom has become our foe instead of our friend. Just a short note to encourage you that the boredom will pass. Just sit through it and let her work her magic as painful as it may be on our information overloaded brains.
