Of chocolate chips & Digital wellbeing – its related i promise

This weekend my hubby came home with a family pack size of chocolate chip cookies. I found myself eating one then another then another. It just kept pulling me in. I remembered a quote I had seen somewhere, “your body will ask for more of what you give it.” You give it broccoli it will ask for more broccoli. You give it sugar it will ask for more sugar and so on and so forth.

Putting on my digital well-being hat, it made me think about how often when we give our brain small dopamine hits it will ask for more dopamine ; almost seek it out. Every time I take a break off social media I feel my mind is at ease. However the moment I log back on after said break I find I am like a zombie – the infinite scroll sucks me in. I want more and better more. If as an adult it is so hard for me imagine what it means for little kids and their poorly developed “brakes” aka – frontal lobes. I say it often parents are fighting an unfair fight. If we however think about the perspective we would not let our kids consume a whole packet of candy – even though my daughter is very capable of this – we also must be their frontal lab with their digital media consumption. Happy chatting until next time! Penny —
